De Klep Wit Gold is awarded as best Asparagus Beer 2023!

 On Sunday, April 2nd of this year, after a three-year absence, the "Lekkerste Aspergebier 2023" prize was once again awarded. This year, De Klep Wit Gold, from the eponymous brewery De Klep in Venlo, won. The goal of this prize is to promote beer as the accompanying beverage for asparagus dishes.

This initiative first saw the light of day in 2014, after a number of Zythologists (beer sommeliers) rightly wondered why wine was mostly promoted as the accompanying beverage for asparagus dishes in the Dutch hospitality industry, when beer has the complementary base flavors that are characteristic of asparagus.

Sweet, pleasant bitterness with sulfuric components that seamlessly match asparagus with ham, new potatoes, and egg. The sparkling aspect of the rich carbonation in beer easily cuts through the coating mouthfeel of clarified butter sauce. From now on, a prize to stimulate Beer & Gastronomy would be awarded annually.

The organization is in the hands of Lekkerste Aspergebier in collaboration with Hap & Tap Magazine. Previous editions have awarded beers such as Urthel Saisonnière, Mongozo Buckwheat White, VandeOirsprong Weizen, Ayinger Brauweisse, de Nar Vienna, and lastly before the pandemic; HAPJ Tripel. The organization is proud that, after 3 years of absence, the start has been made again to give beer the place it deserves with De Klep Wit Gold. Beer on the table!

De Klep Brewery is a craft beer brewery in the city of Venlo that aims to brew beers that historically and currently fit the region of North Limburg. "Ôs Beer" proudly adorns all their advertising materials.

That their "Wit Gold" will soon be available outside the region, and most likely presented alongside a delicious plate of steaming asparagus, is a crowning achievement for Louis Klaassens and his team, who only opened their brand new and professional brewery in the rebellious Foodhall with the revealing name "MOUT" in 2022. The beautiful building that once housed the collection of modern and contemporary art of the Van Bommel Van Dam Museum has been transformed into a vibrant place where the senses are still stimulated.

The submitted beer "De Klep Wit Gold" with 5.8% ABV is above all a delicious thirst quencher. Brewed with no less than four grains; barley, wheat, oats, and buckwheat, it is a full-bodied beer with an extremely soft taste that matches well with classic asparagus preparation. The "Lekkerste Aspergebier 2023" prize and the accompanying predicate were received in the beautiful brewery from De Klep called "Wit Gold" by Zythologist and organizer Joep van Helvert while enjoying a deliciously poured "Wit Gold".
